Personal reflection 2

LSEC 1103 taught me more than I expected. It’s good experience to learn how to summarize articles and searching for them to get important information that you are looking for. In the other hand, Mr. John is one of the greatest teachers that I had experience with. The best thing I liked in the course that we have the chance to check our mistakes with him get some advice and note to get an organized assays. Also, there are some skills improved my writing assays and squeezing them. For example, looking for general information rather than specific information to control the limit of the word counts in the assay. At the beginning of the semester, I was very upset because I was not doing well in summary one and two but later on, I worked hard on my Assignment 1 and I was very optimistic of it. This course will help me a lot in future to do my job and make it easier for me. Mechanical Engineers need a lot of this kind of experience to search and squeeze from books and articles. Mr. John has taught me how to organize the assay by using in-line citation and get the reference for the assay. The biggest challenges in written communication were finding some words to fix the sentences but later on the teacher has given us some vocabulary words. Finally, Assignment 1 and 2 taught me the most important that will help me in my job and it’s an excited course.

Assignment #2 (Story of Stuff )

Introduction

People nowadays, most of them are envious of each other. The material economy of people is just buying and throwing away stuff. The life has changed with technology and in short time we see new stuff in the market. The material economy has five elements, from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to disposal. The system of this world is the same and most of the crises are the same. The government is the most controller of whole this story. They control companies who control the system that changes the world to be better or worse for the people and their life.

Extraction
Natural resources exploitation has wasted the plant by people who think about money more than preserving natural resources. In the short animation film “The Story of Stuff” Annie Leonard said, “One-third of the plant natural resources base has been consumed” (Story of Stuff, 2007). Many people are cutting, mining, hauling and trashing the natural resources. Even the water, 40 % of it has become undrinkable. Also, the air that we breathe is polluted air and the Amazon alone has affected by losing 2000 trees a minute. The people who used to live in forest or desert have no choice accept moving to cities because their places were taken and been wastefulness.

 Production
Toxic chemical have been used in 90% of the production and that affects the natural resources by mixing them together. Corporations are using over 100,000 synthetic chemicals to increase the production and none of these have even tested for unhealthy impacts. Production creates waste and unhealthy chemicals and this must be stopped to protect our world.

Distribution
People never think what Annie Leonard thinks of. The majority of corporations are selling all the toxic contaminated stuff as fast as possible. They just care about getting as much money as they can by keeping the people buying the cheap stuff which can be used for several times. Also, they pay the workers very low and doesn’t care to them of deprive workers of the health insurance. If we think about it, we are affecting our health and the natural resources against money while they get the benefit of doing that. They own the company and externalize the true costs of their production, while we still consume and shop even if we don’t need to but we are all used to shopping. As Annie Leonard says in the Story of Stuff, “Our primary identity has become that of being consumers – not mothers, teachers, or farmers, but of consumers. We shop and shop and shop.”( Story of Stuff, 2007)

Consumption
Consumption by people has been extended between our communities and has been the top priority. Most of the communities are demonstrating between each other. Shopping is the first consumption element that we do. The reason that the traders are making very bad quality, for several times using and drop it in trash to ramp up the economy. Annie Leonard divided the effective strategies in to planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence, (Story of Stuff, 2007). Planned obsolescence means designed for the dump and making useless stuff. For example, plastic bags, coffee cups and sometimes big stuff like computers and barbeques. Perceived obsolescence is making a new stuff with new shape and let people buy while they still use stuff that works perfectly.

Disposal
Garbage has been a big problem to discuss because it affects on our natural resources. People are throwing garbage in a landfill by digging a big hole in the ground. Also, it could be burned in an incinerator while that affects and pollutes the natural resources like air, land water, and it could change the climate. On the other hand, an incinerator has the highest affect because of dioxin.

Consumerism in UAE.
UAE population is around 7 million while each house is using more than 3 cars and that causes effects and damages the environment. UAE has the highest energy consumption per capita in the world. Also, the 2nd highest carbon emission per capita in the world and it’s the 3rd highest water consumption per capita in world. On the other hand, Masdar is one Mubadalla Company; they are arranging to reduce the CO2 uses in UAE by using natural energy. Masdar has started their project to work hard and save the environment by their amazing projects. For example, they has built solar energy farm and made ideas to use the carbon as power and get benefit of it, instead of leave it to pollute the environment. Also, Wind Energy Power is one of their projects and that will help a lot to reduce consumerism by making people get interested to use new thing in their life. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said “The launch of the International Water Summit in Abu Dhabi is a bold and clear signal that an economy based on oil is placing water at the topmost of its agenda.” (International Water Summit Launched in Abu, 2012)

Conclusion
Natural resources are the most important elements in our life to keep our lives safe and clear of obstacles. The government has the authority to make the life simple and safe for people and they can make it hard and unclear for them. Toxin and garbage are put people live in risk.

Masdar Power Project

Introduction

Masdar is owned by Mubadala Development, which is an investment Company owned by the Abu Dhabi Government. Masdar is working on Masdar Power to improve and operate the renewable energy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Masdar is investing in individual projects in different part of renewable energy. Masdar Power is divided in to two parts of renewable energy. The two parts are photovoltaic energy and wind energy. These parts or these units are located in different regions of Abu Dhabi. The Solar Energy is located in Western Region of Abu Dhabi and joint venture with Abengoa Solar and Total. The Wind Energy Farm is going to be on Sir Bani Yas Island and it will have capacity 28.8 MW.

History

Masdar was established in 2006 as a company operating in several areas across Abu Dhabi Emirate as part of the overall vision, and to improve all areas of the renewable energy and sustainable technologies sector for Abu Dhabi. Masdar Power has selected Masdar City and Western Region of Abu Dhabi for their solar power projects, and Sir Bani Yas Island for the wind farm.

Developments to this point
Wind Power
The Bani Yas Wind Farm is the first in the region and cost around US$200m to build. Masdar selected the island because of the added benefits of existing thermal conditions in coastal areas. Masdar has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi’s TDIC about the wind farm in 2008 to develop renewable energy. It was completed in 2010 and will be commissioned early 2012, adding 28.8MW of capacity.

Solar Power
There are two solar energy plants in Abu Dhabi. One is located in North West quadrant of Masdar City with a capacity of 10 MW. A second one is located 6Km southwest from Madinat Zayed with a capacity of 100 MW. The construction phase for this power plant has started in 2010.

The Solar Power Plant of Masdar City has 87,777 panels of thin film and crystalline silicon technologies and is connected to the Abu Dhabi National Grid. It generates 10MW of clean energy per year. This plant was connected to Abu Dhabi’s Distribution Company (ADDC) who develop and operate the distribution network.
Mr. Al Jaber said "The initial project findings have been very positive and if the results continue to be successful, 'beam down' technology has the potential to revolutionize the way in which all solar towers are built in the future," (Stanton, C. ,2010). The PV plant will reduce carbon emissions by 15 tons annually, equivalent to approximately 3300 cars off the streets of Abu Dhabi every year.

Shams 1 Solar Energy project is developed by Shams Power Company, which is owned by Masdar (60%), Abengoa Solar (20%) and Total (20%), and one of the largest Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants of its kind in the world and the largest solar plant in the Middle East.

Modern Development

Wind Energy
Work has recently started on a wind farm project in the Seychelles in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. The 6MW facility will provide up to 11% of the energy on the main island, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Solar Energy
Masdar Solar Energy is planning to develop Shams 2 and Shams 3 following Shams 1. It is also involved in several projects in Spain, US and Middle East adding 6GW in three years.

Conclusion
Masdar Power is the driving force behind solar and wind energy projects in Abu Dhabi Emirate. So far ca. 130MW of clean energy are either in planning or have already been added within the UAE, in addition to the 6GW projects outside the UAE. This not only puts Abu Dhabi firmly on the clean energy map, but also in a prime position to further diversify energy creation.

Personal Reflaction

Yousif Khamas Personal Reflection

Reading and writing course has given me more knowledge about squeezing (summarizing). With help from Mr. Gregory Vrhovnik I have learned many new things help me to improve my writing and how to get the specific point from any article. Also, he thought me how to find the references and got used to use some websites to make it easier.
Academic reading and writing course has many benefits. Firstly, Mr. Gregory Vrhovnik has given out exercise to do in class and that helped us to care about time and divide in to three parts. Part one, find the sources and get the reference about the articles. Second part, search about the main points between the paragraphs. Last part, organize the point and write the summery in limit time. Secondly, the practice that we did in class helped us a lot to do well in the tests. Also, follow the instruction that given by Mr. Gregory which that helped us to know the most important needed and focus on the requirements. Thirdly, it’s my first time that I’m going to summarize articles in 500-600 words. I’m really excited to see my level of writing by help from my teacher and get some advice from him to get my final essay done one time. This course give many experience like reading article and get more knowledge about news and what happen around us.

Finally, I would really thank Mr. Gregory about what he has done to help us to improve our skills in summarizing and the way that we have to use. Academic reading and writing course is very important course prepare us to have ability to read and write summary of any articles.

Abu Dhabi Wind Farm

Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Company has started a project Dh734.6 in wind farm and one of source renewable energy close to the Saudi Arabian border. Because the project needs windy power and the area has low windy, Masdar is designing a special turbine blades. Masdar wind farm has built two renewable plants shams 1 and nour 1 join 100 megawatt to produce renewable energy 7% to Abu Dhabi government. Masdar plant has taken place near Saudi border to produce electricity. Wind farm of masdar get ready soon to generate power early in two years. The nature of the wind is limited in the region and it’s harder to develop in the GCC than solar power. According to masdar estimates, Msader wind farm plant could cost $2 million per megawatt and$200 million as total price. Abu Dhabi Government, banks and foreign partners are subsidizing the project.

Excerpts of The Bedouin live in Desert

A Group of UAE Bedouin people know every well of water in our region cause of the hard life they live all year. The hard life forced them to find ways to reach for wells among dunes. Digging wells in desert by men around 3 to 10 meters in ground to get source of water. Using sheepskin to desalinate sea water and digging well were the most two ways using by Bedouin. Mr. Bin Belaisha says, “The well was dug twice because the first attempt was a failure as no water found” (Malek, 2011). Camels and sheep were Bedouin ways to get milk and meat from. The Bedouin were used to live in extreme heat. Finally, the Bedouin have ability to live in heat more than other people.
