Masdar Power Project

Introduction

Masdar is owned by Mubadala Development, which is an investment Company owned by the Abu Dhabi Government. Masdar is working on Masdar Power to improve and operate the renewable energy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Masdar is investing in individual projects in different part of renewable energy. Masdar Power is divided in to two parts of renewable energy. The two parts are photovoltaic energy and wind energy. These parts or these units are located in different regions of Abu Dhabi. The Solar Energy is located in Western Region of Abu Dhabi and joint venture with Abengoa Solar and Total. The Wind Energy Farm is going to be on Sir Bani Yas Island and it will have capacity 28.8 MW.

History

Masdar was established in 2006 as a company operating in several areas across Abu Dhabi Emirate as part of the overall vision, and to improve all areas of the renewable energy and sustainable technologies sector for Abu Dhabi. Masdar Power has selected Masdar City and Western Region of Abu Dhabi for their solar power projects, and Sir Bani Yas Island for the wind farm.

Developments to this point
Wind Power
The Bani Yas Wind Farm is the first in the region and cost around US$200m to build. Masdar selected the island because of the added benefits of existing thermal conditions in coastal areas. Masdar has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi’s TDIC about the wind farm in 2008 to develop renewable energy. It was completed in 2010 and will be commissioned early 2012, adding 28.8MW of capacity.

Solar Power
There are two solar energy plants in Abu Dhabi. One is located in North West quadrant of Masdar City with a capacity of 10 MW. A second one is located 6Km southwest from Madinat Zayed with a capacity of 100 MW. The construction phase for this power plant has started in 2010.

The Solar Power Plant of Masdar City has 87,777 panels of thin film and crystalline silicon technologies and is connected to the Abu Dhabi National Grid. It generates 10MW of clean energy per year. This plant was connected to Abu Dhabi’s Distribution Company (ADDC) who develop and operate the distribution network.
Mr. Al Jaber said "The initial project findings have been very positive and if the results continue to be successful, 'beam down' technology has the potential to revolutionize the way in which all solar towers are built in the future," (Stanton, C. ,2010). The PV plant will reduce carbon emissions by 15 tons annually, equivalent to approximately 3300 cars off the streets of Abu Dhabi every year.

Shams 1 Solar Energy project is developed by Shams Power Company, which is owned by Masdar (60%), Abengoa Solar (20%) and Total (20%), and one of the largest Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants of its kind in the world and the largest solar plant in the Middle East.

Modern Development

Wind Energy
Work has recently started on a wind farm project in the Seychelles in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. The 6MW facility will provide up to 11% of the energy on the main island, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Solar Energy
Masdar Solar Energy is planning to develop Shams 2 and Shams 3 following Shams 1. It is also involved in several projects in Spain, US and Middle East adding 6GW in three years.

Conclusion
Masdar Power is the driving force behind solar and wind energy projects in Abu Dhabi Emirate. So far ca. 130MW of clean energy are either in planning or have already been added within the UAE, in addition to the 6GW projects outside the UAE. This not only puts Abu Dhabi firmly on the clean energy map, but also in a prime position to further diversify energy creation.
